The Haverhill City Council is promising to take a hard look at road conditions at an area where a fatal traffic accident occurred two weeks ago.
Haverhill resident, Andrew J. Denoncour, who lives on Amesbury Road, told the Council last Tuesday the area where 56-year-old Beverly resident Peter Delsette was killed has been a problem spot for as long as he has lived there.
“I wish I had recorded all of the incidents that have occurred here in the time that I’ve lived here. It’s countless at this point. Within just the last year, we’ve had a couple of incidents that have been on the more serious side. One resulted in a fist fight in the middle of the road. One, a couple of weeks ago, resulted in Amesbury Line Road being closed after someone flew down Amesbury Line Road and snapped a phone pole. This is just within the very recent memory and, of course, a fatal accident from last weekend,” he said.
Denoncour said his house has experienced property damage on four different occasions, costing him more than $1,000. He also said one of his neighbors actually had a car smash into his home.
Councilor Michael S. McGonagle said he spoke with police investigating the most recent fatality. He said they are looking at conditions that may have caused that accident.
Delsette was killed at Amesbury and Brandy Brow Roads in Haverhill, near the Merrimac line.
The Council voted unanimously to send the matter to the Traffic and Safety Committee for review.
In a related matter, Councilors William J. Macek and Joseph J. Bevilacqua raised a safety concern in the area of 70 Washington St., downtown. A resident there asked councilors for help.
The Council voted to send the issue to its Traffic and Safety Committee as well.
