WHAV’s Community Spotlight is turning its microphones to those civic and charitable organizations that make Greater Haverhill a wonderful place to live.
Haverhill chemist Dr. James R Nichols built Winnekenni Castle between 1873 and 1875 after being inspired by a visit to England. The Victorian castle, serving as a summer home for Nichols and his cousin, was sold to the City of Haverhill in 1895 becoming a favorite landmark and valuable part of the community. Today, it serves as a recreational park and venue for concerts, plays, workshops, parties and fundraisers.
In 1968, the Winnekenni Foundation was founded as a nonprofit organization by Haverhill citizens with the mission to restore Winnekenni Castle which was in ruins. Today, it promotes the arts and sciences for residents of Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley.
