Today’s Obituaries—March 6: Dalton, Durso

Arthur “Artie” O. Dalton III, 44, of Haverhill, died Sunday March 1, at home in the presence of his mother. Raised and educated in Haverhill, he excelled as a finish carpenter and was most recently employed in Boston. He was a proud Boy Scout growing up. Visitation is Sunday, March 8, at Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 S. Main St., Haverhill, from 2-5 p.m. Celebration of his life takes place Monday in the Rehoboth Lighthouse Gospel Church, 409 Washington St., Haverhill, from 6-9 p.m.

Lawrence “Larry” J. Durso, 103, formerly of Bradford, died March 4, at Edgewood Retirement Community, North Andover, where he was affectionately referred to as “Don Lorenzo.” He was educated in Haverhill and joined the U.S. Marines, serving three years. While in the Marine Corp he was selected for the honor guard of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis, during his 1936 tour of Caribbean and South American nations. He later joined the U.S. Navy Seabees Construction Battalion during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. Taught to lay bricks by his father as a young boy, Durso excelled at all areas of construction, and was a leader of the Durso family’s General Construction Company, building Esso Gas Stations all over New England, in addition to apartment buildings, residential homes, and shopping centers. In later years, the company diversified into real estate development. His Funeral Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, March 10, 10 a.m., in Sacred Hearts Church, 165 S. Main St. Burial follows in St. Patrick Cemetery, Haverhill. At his request, there will be no visitation. Arrangements are by H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Bradford and Haverhill.
