The Haverhill City Clerk’s office is staying open late tonight for voter registration in time for the state’s presidential primary election.

The Massachusetts presidential primary elections are March 3 and is open to those who have registered by tonight’s 8 p.m. deadline for in-person registration and midnight for online registration. City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas encourages voting.

“It’s the only power you really have. I recommend people vote. Most people really enjoy it. They like coming in early and it’s their decision when they go and vote rather than a particular day and time,” said Koutoulas.

Tonight is also the deadline to switch party affiliation. Voters who are registered in the Democratic, Republican, Green-Rainbow or Libertarian parties cannot vote in any other party’s primary. Voters registered as independent or as any other political designation may choose their party ballot at their polling place without joining a party.

Use Secretary of State William F. Galvin’s Online Voter Registration System to check current voter registration information, register to vote, update your address or change parties. The Online Voter Registration System can be found at RegisterToVoteMA.com.

The deadline to submit an online registration is 11:59 p.m., tonight. Mail-in forms must be postmarked no later than Feb.12. All local election offices are open until 8 p.m., tonight for residents to register to vote in person.

Early voting is Feb. 24, 8-5 p.m. and Feb. 28, 8-8 p.m. at City Hall.
