Haverhill has three brand-new recruits headed to fight fires in the city: John Dill, Anthony Lucia and Shane Surette, who graduated from the state’s firefighting academy Friday.
The men are among 32 firefighters from 17 departments going to work across the state after completing the 50-day program under the direction of State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey. Leominster Deputy Fire Chief Scott Cordio, also an academy instructor, addressed graduates during Friday’s ceremony at the Department of Fire Services in Stow.
Training for the new firefighters included search and rescue, ladder operations and fire attack skills, among other life-saving behaviors. The Massachusetts Fire Training Council also named them certified hazardous materials first responders.
