A Memorial Day weekend car accident left a Bradford family with one son in the hospital and his twin brother behind bars after what police say was a hit-and-run that began over a sentimental wardrobe item.

Haverhill Police responded to the intersection of Lincolnshire Drive and Haymeadow Circle Sunday, May 26 just before 5 p.m. for a report of a car accident. Sgt. Jamie Landry, Sgt. Kevin Lynch, Officer Justin Graham and Officer Zachary Phair found 21-year-old Bradley McLaughlin drifting in and out of consciousness face down on the pavement.
According to the man’s father, Bradley and his twin brother Daniel McLaughlin got into a fight inside their home after Daniel allegedly stole a scarf Bradley considers very sentimental. Eyewitnesses told police that in an attempt to retrieve the clothing, Bradley left the home in a rush and “jumped on the hood” of the green minivan driven by his brother, holding on while Daniel allegedly drove away at a high rate of speed.
One witness “saw the vehicle start to jerk from side to side in what she saw as an attempt to get Bradley off the vehicle. The next thing she saw was Bradley on the side of the road,” Phair said.
Trinity EMS transported Bradley McLaughlin to Lawrence General and he was later taken to a Boston-area hospital for further treatment.
Multiple attempts to serve a Haverhill Police warrant for the arrest of Daniel McLaughlin at Haymeadow Circle were unsuccessful. He later turned himself in at the Bailey Boulevard police station on Tuesday night, May 28 and was arraigned on one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Haverhill District Court. Judge Patricia Dowling released him on his own recognizance until his next court hearing in early June.
