Eighty of Haverhill’s littlest sprouts helped local leaders mark 2019’s Arbor Day with the Exchange Club’s annual “Trees for Tots” program, planting a new tree on the grounds of Hunking School Thursday.

Joining Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Hunking Principal Shannon Nolan were members of the Exchange Club including former Haverhill mayor John Guerin and Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce’s Hillary Rogers.

Fiorentini was delighted to take part in the annual tradition, moved to the Hunking this year from Walnut Square School.

“These are all first graders, and I asked if they had grandparents and they raised their hands. I said ‘Someday, when you’re a grandparent, you’re going to be able to take your grandchild here and tell them you helped plant this tree because the tree will be here. Planting a tree is a plant for tomorrow,” Fiorentini told WHAV.

A plaque commemorating the day’s event was placed at the foot of the tree, donated by Rogers Spring Hill Garden and Farm Center.
