WHAV Fall Membership Drive Remembers Ralph Hall

WHAV morning news anchor Ralph Hall was most familiar to listeners for his “No schools, all schools Haverhill” snow emergency announcements for two decades. Hall came to WHAV in 1963 after working for the Lawrence Post Office.

Hall’s work day began early, picking up overnight police reports on his way to the station each morning. He played the National Anthem, read the station sign-on announcement and proceeded to deliver multiple newscasts each morning. Like his erstwhile sidekick, Tom Bergeron, he stayed on the air until early afternoon to anchor, what was called, “Expanded News” at noon.

For more than two decades, sharp-eyed observers would see his name on scales and gas pumps across the area when he also served as Haverhill’s and Methuen’s sealer of weights and measures.

Help celebrate WHAV’s diamond jubilee and return to its 1947 studio building in downtown Haverhill. Give a housewarming gift in support of Greater Haverhill’s only public radio station and nonprofit local news service. Just click here.
