Edwin V. Johnson.
This year’s WHAV Fall Membership Drive continues the focus on the 75th anniversary of WHAV first coming to the service of local audiences—a mission that today is more important than ever.

Legendary local newscaster Edwin V. Johnson, known to generations of Haverhill High School students as the affable public speaking instructor, introduced “Partyline” in 1954 to solicit listener feedback on the news. Because there was not yet a delay system to guard against abuse, Johnson would take calls off air, paraphrase residents and present their views between tracks of popular music.

Help celebrate WHAV’s diamond jubilee and return to its 1947 studio building in downtown Haverhill. Give a housewarming gift in support of Greater Haverhill’s only public radio station and nonprofit local news service. Just click here.
