A Haverhill firefighter became ill and was sent to a hospital while on a mutual aid call to help battle a four-alarm house fire early Saturday night in West Newbury. Haverhill Fire Chief Robert M. Legendary local newscaster Edwin V. Johnson, known to generations of Haverhill High School students as the affable public speaking instructor, introduced “Partyline” in 1954 to solicit listener feedback on the news. Because there was not yet a delay system to guard against abuse, Johnson would take calls off air, paraphrase residents and present their views between tracks of popular music.
