Before You Go…

This year’s WHAV Spring Membership Drive focuses on the 75th anniversary of WHAV first coming to the service of local audiences—a mission that today is more important than ever.

Legendary local newscaster Edwin V. Johnson, known to generations of Haverhill High School students as the affable public speaking instructor, introduced “Partyline” in 1954 to solicit listener feedback on the news. Because there was not yet a delay system to guard against abuse, Johnson would take calls off air, paraphrase residents and present their views between tracks of popular music.

Local merchants used to pick up the tab for WHAV’s service, but due to nationwide trends listeners are asked to step up during this critical spring membership drive. Help celebrate WHAV’s diamond jubilee with a birthday gift in support of Greater Haverhill’s only public radio station and nonprofit local news service. Just click here to see the options.
