WHAV’s Spring Membership Drive Remembers Phil Christie

When WHAV introduced its “All-Request Dancing Party” on Saturday nights in the late 1940s, the station wasn’t sure people were yet familiar with the term “disc jockey.” To illustrate the metaphor, they dressed up a young Phil Christie in a horse jockey’s silks and photographed him near record turntables.

Fresh out of Phillips Academy Andover, Christie would go on to a long career in radio. In his final years, his voice became well-known for his “attention shoppers” messages over the loudspeakers at Market Basket stores.
