With the explosion of new media outlets—from
Internet jukeboxes to 500-channel cable television—some may wonder what
role WHAV uniquely plays in the modern media mix. What is so important
about WHAV that it deserves public and underwriter support?
At a time when there is a proliferation of new entertainment choices,
traditional sources of vital local information are disappearing.
Passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed massive
consolidation of broadcast properties, greatly curtailing local content
in favor of mass produced and less expensive generic programs.
Similarly, local newspapers downsized or closed as the Internet robbed
them of lucrative and life-sustaining classified advertising. In 2007,
the National Endowment for Democracy made a case for community radio
“Community radio plays a vital role in building vibrant communities, in
mobilizing groups to action by informing and empowering citizens, in
giving voice to the marginalized groups of society, and in bringing
community needs to the attention of local and even national
governments.”
Community radio lives at WHAV, but only with your support. Review the
lists of programs below from WHAV’s Edwin V. Johnson Newsroom and see
for yourself how local causes and voices have found a home at WHAV.
