WHAV
Joins Pacifica Network
Network Offers
National Programs of Local Interest
WHAV has expanded its diverse program
offerings through partnership with the Pacifica Radio Network, the
oldest noncommercial broadcast network in the United States. Pacifica
Radio is renowned for cutting edge grassroots journalism and arts, as
well as broadcasting a variety of viewpoints that are otherwise
unavailable in mainstream media.
WHAV is airing most of Pacifica’s schedule, including Democracy Now!,
the award-winning daily news magazine hosted by Amy Goodman, live at 8
a.m., Monday through Friday, and Free Speech Radio News, an
international newscast using on-location reporters, at 5 p.m. weekdays.
Other Pacifica Network programs carried by WHAV include Explorations, a
science and technology program with Dr. Michio Kaku; Sprouts, featuring
local stories of national interest from Pacifica affiliates; and WINGS,
news and current affairs featuring strong women’s voices and ideas from
around the world (See full list below)..
“WHAV, as a public community radio station, is dedicated to fostering
better understanding and dialogue. Pacifica affiliation helps the
station bring news and information, arts and commentary from around the
world. There is a focus on the people and stories behind the
headlines,” said WHAV General Manager Tim Coco. “Affiliation also means
WHAV’s local producers and volunteers may contribute programs to the
network for airing around the world. It is a great opportunity.”
Pacifica Network includes 150 independent public, community,
university, low-power, and Internet radio stations throughout the
United States, Canada, Europe and Africa. Pacifica Radio owns five of
these radio stations in New York City, Washington D.C., Houston and Los
Angeles, and other stations belong to the network as affiliates.
Pacifica Radio was founded in 1948. It predates National Public Radio
and pioneered listener-sponsored radio. Beginning with KPFA-FM in
Berkeley, Calif., Pacifica became known as an outlet for chronicling
social justice movements and providing uncensored breaking journalism.
It has historically served as a beacon for free speech and artistic
experimentation with the radio medium.
The WHAV call letters have been associated with local broadcasting
since 1947. WHAV is today operated by Public Media of New England Inc.,
a not-for-profit corporation. Since 2004, the call has served the
Merrimack Valley’s pioneer Internet radio station at WHAV.net and a
number of public access cable television stations in Andover, Haverhill
and Methuen, and Plaistow and Sandown, N.H. The station is also heard
over AM 1640 in northern Haverhill and Plaistow, N.H.
