Wave Weather

The Boston media doesn’t always understand unique Valley weather conditions. Acclaimed WHAV Meterologists Rob Carolan and Gary Best provide Merrimack Valley’s most accurate weather forecasts every half hour, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week.

War of the Worlds

WHAV brings back the Mercury Theater on the Air broadcast of the “War of the Worlds” just in time for Halloween.

This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the broadcast that panicked the nation.

Orson Welles based the play on the 1898 novel by H. G. Wells. However, the radio version used simulated news bulletins to announce the Martian invasion of Earth. The result was widespread panic as many Americans fled their homes to escape the Martian “death ray.”

‘Tidal Wave’ Contest Leads to Development of New Mobile Apps
WHAV Plans iPhone, Android & BlackBerry Listening Apps

SmartPhoneWHAV’s recent “Tidal Wave of Winnings” contest generated many ideas, suggestions and comments — many focusing on the need to make listening easier and more convenient.

Respondents cited desires for easier cell phone listening, FM reception and expanded cable television time. WHAV has long sought an FM license, but few frequencies and even fewer federal application “windows” have stalled progress. Similarly, WHAV is grateful for the time public access cable television stations have set aside for WHAV programs, but management recognizes these affiliates already have jam-packed schedules.

“Development of one-button listening applications for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices is the most feasible means to meet listener needs,” said WHAV General Manager Tim Coco. “For the past seven years, WHAV has pioneered the development of ultra-high-quality digital broadcasting. Creation of specialized smart phone apps is the next logical step,” he explained. The technology has been identified and sponsors are being sought to underwrite development costs. In exchange, sponsors will have their names and logos featured on mobile phone screens everywhere, he said.

Here are two of many comments received by contest respondents:

“WHAV has come a long way since I was a little girl growing up in this area. It used to be that WHAV was a station for ‘old fogies.’ That’s changed, however. It’s much more contemporary. I just wish it were on FM so I could listen to it on my portable radio as I’m going for my daily walk,” a fan from Haverhill wrote.

A West Newbury listener commented, “Programming is great. I just wish I could get the station on my radio.”

Other remarks focused on local programming.

“I really enjoy WHAV and have been listening to it for decades. It’s nice to know it’s strictly local and that I can enjoy hearing things about my home town,” wrote a Haverhill listener.

Another West Newbury resident said, “I like the ‘insider’ nature of local coverage.”

“I really enjoy the selection of music played and the local angle of news!” a Haverhill resident commented.

Open Mike Show host Jack Bevelaqua received a large, but equal number of pros and cons. One listener wrote, “I like the Open Mike Show. We have listened to it from the first of the Bill Pike era,” while another said, “I really like the idea of a local talk show but he’s such a turn off. I have stopped listening and won’t go back as long as he’s the host.”

New Servers End ‘Skipping’ Problem
WHAV also Gives New Hardware & Software to HCTV

WHAV recently named Energy Group Networks as its downstream server host and selected the company’s New York City data center to distribute streams from WHAV and its sister station, StreamingSuperstation.com.

As many listeners observed, WHAV’s broadband and cable television streams were stricken during August and September with what many described as a “skipping” problem. An intense technical analysis placed the blame on a bandwidth “throttling” process implemented by a rogue network operator somewhere along the Internet between WHAV and its former host.

Since switching server hosts, the reliability and quality of both the broadband and cell phone streams have improved dramatically. WHAV apologizes for the inconvenience while the problem was being investigated and solutions sought. Many thanks also to the seven public access stations across the Merrimack Valley that updated WHAV’s Internet addresses!

WHAV also provided new computer hardware and software for Haverhill Community Television Channel 22 to further improve reliability.
