Truly Johnny Dollar
Johnny
Dollar was the last of radio’s great detectives. His role was unusual
in that he was a freelance insurance investigator based in Hartford,
Conn. Besides earning commissions on what he saved his clients, Dollar
was known for lavishly living on his “action packed expense account.”
At the end of each assignment, he signed the expense account and case
notes, “Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.”

Pereira Joins WHAV as
Summer Newsroom Intern
Northern Essex
Community College Intern Has On-Air Tasks
Matthew R. Pereira, a Liberal Arts student
attending Northern Essex Community College, joined WHAV last month as a
newsroom intern for the summer.
Pereira, of Tewksbury, is participating in
the WHAV Radio College Internship Program, which provides practical,
on-the-job experience to students interested in pursuing careers in
broadcasting, journalism and related fields.
“Matthew is ambitious and eager to learn. He
has already voiced newscasts, community calendar announcements and
Business Bulletin segments,” said Tim Coco, president and general
manager. He is also learning about live event production as an
assistant on the team of the Open Mike Show, a live call-in program
with host Jack Bevelaqua, Coco said.
Pereira is a 2002 graduate of Tewksbury High
School and will graduate from Northern Essex Community College in
December. He also received a certificate in Audio Recording and
Production from the Institute of Audio Research, New York, in 2004.
The WHAV call letters have been associated with local broadcasting
since 1947. For five years, the WHAV call has been heard on the
Internet at WHAV.net and a number of public access cable television
stations in Andover, Groveland, Haverhill and Methuen. Low-power AM
radio service at 1640 and mobile telephone service were also recently
inaugurated.
