Residents Turn to WHAV as Much of Valley Plunges into Darkness

Listeners Tune in During Worst “Blackout” Since 1965

Listeners with power tuned to WHAV on the Internet and cable television and those with no electricity tuned in on cell phones for local news during the area’s worst power outage since the “Great Blackout” of Nov. 9, 1965.

Once regaining its own studio power, WHAV provided coverage of the storm and its aftermath every 30 minutes beginning Saturday afternoon. Local reports were interspersed with regional reports from WHAV’s network partner, Westwood One.

Listeners learned Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Methuen Mayor William M. Manzi, III had declared states of emergency. Information about emergency shelters was also provided.

Fiorentini also learned from WHAV that President Bush had officially declared Massachusetts and New Hampshire disaster areas. The mayor was heard on WHAV Sunday urging senior citizens not to remain in cold homes three days in a row. He also said the length of the outage, blamed by some on deregulation of utilities, is “unacceptable.” He explained lights out for some would stretch into Monday night.

Callers to WHAV complained about Haverhill’s city Web site being down during most of the emergency. Another area AM radio station also did not return to the air until early Sunday night.

Sponsor Local News, Weather for Only $78 a Week; Be Heard on iPhones, Nokia

There are several iTunes apps for hearing WHAV & Streaming-Superstation on your phone. Certain Nokia phones also receive the stations.
“I found you on my iPhone,” reported one excited listener recently, demonstrating how Xelocast radio stations are grabbing ever larger audiences thanks to a variety of high-tech devices.

You can take advantage of this trend by sponsoring News, Weather or Community Spotlight for only $78 a week – about half the lowest prices of other area stations. Besides cellular telephones, loyal WHAV listeners are tuning in to programming on the Internet, over a number of cable television stations across the Valley and on AM 1640.

A 13-week sponsorship includes:

  • 10, 30-second commercials weekly!

  • Opening and closing announcements (20 more promotional announcements about your business)

  • FREE Bonus commercials (as time permits)

  • FREE Directory listing at WHAV.net with link

Greater discounts are available to those who choose optional 26- or 52-week advertising plans.

Low priced with the economy in mind, sponsorships provide an opportunity for your business to grow while your competitors are cutting back. Studies prove that those who continue to market during downturns enjoy greater market share in the long run.

To place your order, call (978) 374-2111 and ask for Teddie Sarmanian, or complete the secure online form here .

WHAV Seeks Leaders to Serve on New Community Advisory Board

WHAV is seeking seven to nine volunteers to serve on its new Community Advisory Board.

The board will meet quarterly to discuss important community needs, provide feedback and offer suggestions about how WHAV’s programming might address identified issues. Those wishing to serve should reflect a cross-section of the community, perform as an ambassador for the station, be willing to attend quarterly meetings and serve a one-year term, which may be renewed.

While comments and suggestions will receive highest consideration, the board will have no authority over the management or operation of the station. There is no financial compensation.

Those interested should submit a letter outlining their interests and a resume to:

189 Ward Hill Avenue
Ward Hill, MA 01835

Or via e-mail to [email protected]. Thank you for your support of community radio!
