Former Haverhill City Councilor Robert E. DesMarais died Thursday, Feb. 2, at age 86. DesMarais served in the U.S. Army in post-Armistice Korea and New York City and “carried a bag” as a salesman for Hallmark Cards for 30 years. He also served as a longtime member of the city’s Board of Registrars of Voters. He was a communicant and volunteer at Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford for many years besides serving until recently as the secretary of the Garrison Golf Club League at Crystal Springs Country Club.

Alan Gordon Cox, 67, of Merrimac, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 30, surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his parents William D. Cox and Beatrice (Denzin) Cox and brother Joseph Cox of Haverhill, and sister in-law Paula Cox of Groveland. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Sandra (Guy) Cox, daughter Elizabeth Cox and son in-law Christopher Gurley. He is also survived by his sister Jennifer Dalrymple and husband Mike Dalrymple; brothers David Cox, William Cox and partner Joel Gagnon, John Cox and Stephen and Melissa Cox; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Former Haverhill City Councilor, Police Sgt. David Hall Dies at 85

Former Haverhill City Councilor and Police Sgt. David E. Hall died Thursday at age 85. For 38 years, Hall served on the Haverhill Police Department, retiring as a sergeant in 2002. He began as a reserve officer in 1964 and became a permanent officer in 1967. Following retirement, he was elected to the Haverhill City Council for eight years.

She was born in Winchendon on Oct. 26, 1930, daughter of the late James and Florence L. (Zink) Sexton. Bergman was educated in the Winchendon and Watertown School systems and was a graduate of Watertown High School with the class of 1948.

Mary Ellen (Mahoney) Goecke, 90, of Haverhill, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness, with family by her side. Goecke was born in Haverhill May 16, 1932. She was the daughter of the late William H. and Mary L. (Boover) Mahoney. She lived in Groveland for a time, but she spent most of her life in Haverhill. She attended Haverhill Public Schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1950. She later attended McIntosh Business School and Northern Essex Community College. While raising five young children, she worked in the deli and meat department at A&P Supermarket in Riverside, and later worked at Cleary’s Cleaners.

Ronald L. Auclair, 75, a longtime Haverhill resident, died peacefully on Oct. 20, at High Pointe Hospice House, surrounded by his loved ones. Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, son of the late Joseph L. and Jennie Mae (Durgin) Auclair, he attended local schools and graduated from the former Haverhill Trade School with the class of 1964. Following graduation he went on to serve in the Army National Guard until 1970. A well-known and respected contractor and real estate developer, he was the owner of Auclair Builders and a principal of Haley Realty Trust, Piper Realty and Debron Realty Trust.

Martin B. “Marty” Epstein of Andover died at his home Friday, surrounded by family. He was born in Haverhill July 5, 1940, to Manuel and Elsie (Snyder) Epstein. He was a graduate of Brown University, majoring in Political Science. He and his family owned Snyder Leather. The company started as a tannery in Haverhill, then shifted to a factory outlet, growing into a chain of 10 stores at one point.

Well-known downtown Haverhill insurance agent Malcolm D. Kimball Jr. of Haverhill, passed away Oct. 3. At age 67. Kimball took great pride in serving as the fourth-generation owner of R.B. Kimball Insurance Agency on Merrimack Street in Haverhill. He was born in Exeter, N.H., on June 28, 1955, and graduated from Pentucket Regional High School with the class of 1973.

Ronald J. Sanville, 93, husband of Rita M. (Morin) Sanville, passed away Oct. 2, at High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill with his loving family by his side. Born in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Louis V. and Florence E. (Towne) Sanville. Raised in Haverhill, he was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1948. Sanville was a classic “do it yourselfer”, always fixing things.
