Northern Essex Community College Athletics Hall of Fame to Induct Fowle, Maiola, Fenerci

Former cross-country standout Larry Fowle, national baseball player of the year Colby Maiola and men’s basketball standout Sercan Fenerci will be formally inducted this month into the Northern Essex Community College Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2024 class will be the fifth induction class since the college created the Hall of Fame in 2019. Dinner ceremonies take place Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 6 p.m., in the Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill Campus. Tickets are $35 each and available online until Monday, March 11. Fowle, a Haverhill native, has held the Northern Essex cross country school record since 2001 and is the only athlete to ever break the 27-minute mark for 8,000 meters at the college.

Gateway Academy Students Learn How to Stay on Budget During Financial Reality Fair

Students at Haverhill’s Gateway Academy recently took part in a Financial Reality Fair, learning about real-world financial scenarios, budgeting and personal finance management. The fair was organized Haverhill Public-Private Partnership, known as HP3, and Align Credit Union. HP3 Director Allison Heartquist said “Many students found the experience eye-opening, including one student who participated multiple times to refine their budgeting skills for a positive month-end balance. The Reality Fair is designed to ignite interest among students exploring career options and to educate them on considerations based on their desired lifestyle.”

Gateway Academy Principal Brian Edmunds called the fair “a tremendous success,” noting students were talking with him about their experiences throughout the day. During the fair, students select a career and receive a gross monthly salary.

New York Times Bestselling Author Krosoczka to Address Students at Haverhill’s Gateway Academy

New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist and TED speaker Jarrett J. Krosoczka addresses a special assembly of students at Haverhill’s Gateway Academy on Wednesday. Organizers say, Krosoczka will share insights into his creative process, discuss the importance of storytelling and encourage students to explore their own creativity—all the while instilling the power of resilience and hard work. His multimedia presentation details his creative journey and the process he takes to create his award-winning books. His picture books include “Peanut Butter and Jellyfish,” the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series and the National Book Award finalist “Hey, Kiddo.”

In addition to his work in print, Krosoczka produced, directed and performed in the full-cast audiobook adaptations of his graphic novels. Krosoczka has been a guest on NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross, profiled in The New York Times, featured on Good Morning America and delivered three TED Talks.

Third Annual Northern Essex Community College Giving Day Supports Areas of Greatest Need

Northern Essex Community College is readying for its third annual Giving Day—a 24-hour fundraiser uniting alumni, friends, staff, faculty and students in supporting the college and its students. Giving Day takes place Thursday, April 4, with themed challenges, prizes and more. The date is significant since more than 60 years ago, April 7 was the date students could first register for classes at the newly formed Northern Essex Community College. Donors who contribute $50 or more will be eligible to receive a special prize. Donations are accepted online and at tables in the Dimitry Building on the Lawrence Campus and the Student Center and Spurk buildings on the Haverhill Campus, where there will be giveaways.

MakeIT Haverhill Offers Free Computer Classes in April and May; Free Chromebooks for Grads

MakeIT Haverhill is registering those interested in taking free basic and intermediate computer classes during April and May. Classes take place over eight weeks, starting in April and ending in May, and include Computer Basics, taught in English or Spanish, and Intermediate, taught in English. Classes are open to anyone ages 16 years or older regardless of city or town where they live. Graduating students receive a new Chromebook to keep thanks to our partnership with Tech Goes Home. Registration takes place Monday, March 4, from 4-6 p.m., at MakeIT Haverhill, 301 Washington St., Haverhill.

Haverhill High Pilots First Live, Virtual Tour of Auschwitz in U.S.; Program Set for 9th Grade

Haverhill High School students and educators saw a live, virtual tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp from Harbor Place yesterday, the first of its kind in the United States. As if the viewer is walking beside her, the projectors in the conference room showed video from the guide’s perspective as she crossed the grounds. Survivor testimony and archival images overlayed the live stream, which was interspersed with drone footage and two introductory videos. The occasional visitor coming into view, as well as snatches of conversation in foreign languages, further added to a sense of realism, of being present in the former death camp. The learning opportunity is set to become a regular part of the ninth-grade modern world history curriculum beginning this fall.

Haverhill Schools’ Pediatrician Maddox to Provide Drug Misuse Stats to HOPE Task Force

Dr. John L. Maddox, Haverhill Public Schools’ pediatrician, is scheduled to provide an update on efforts to secure a Drug Free Community Grant during tomorrow’s meeting of the mayor’s Haverhill Overdose Prevention and Education—HOPE—Task Force. Maddox will report on the four core measures—alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and prescription drug misuse—that grant award recipients must collect and the data being collected by Haverhill schools. The HOPE Task Force meets Wednesday, Feb. 28, 4 p.m., at the Haverhill Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St., second floor. Besides the report, said HOPE Program Director Charlie Manzi, Pridestar Trinity EMS will provide an overdose report for January.
