(Additional photographs below.) In a ceremony at the Bradford Fire Station, Haverhill and state officials joined with Congresswoman Lori Trahan Monday to celebrate a $4.1 million federal grant to hire 16 firefighters and permanently add a second ladder truck. As WHAV reported first in September, a grant writing team led by Capt. Richard Shellene and written and supported by Lt. Brian Ray and firefighters James Bizeur, Michael Foustoukos, Ryan Fairbanks and Timothy Carroll secured the award from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Trahan, speaking directly to firefighters noted Haverhill’s application rose to the top on its own merits. “When you all make the brave decision to serve your community as a firefighter, you know what it requires and we know what it requires. You put your lives on the line each day to make sure every single person in this community is safe and secure and we are grateful,” she said.

Haverhill to Honor U.S. Navy Ensign McLaughlin Who Died in Crash Protecting Residents
|
Haverhill is getting ready to formally honor U.S. Navy Ensign Robert E. McLaughlin who gave his life steering his crippled plane away from a densely populated neighborhood during the waning days of World War II
As WHAV first reported last August, Haverhill native McLaughlin was a 22-year-old pilot who was making a “farewell salute” to his mother and father who were watching from their Lafayette Square home. According to a news report at the time, “Flying at a low attitude as he circled the area in which his home was located, the young naval pilot was on a training naval flight, preparatory to receiving his commission as a second lieutenant, when his plane was suddenly seen to go into a dive as he ‘waved’ with his wings to his family to identify himself.” During the setting of a monument last summer at Cashman Park, Veterans Services Director Jeffrey C. Hollett told WHAV about the Nov. 4, 1944 crash of McLaughlin’s F4U-1D Corsair. “When he blew a piston—which is what they believed caused the problem—the Corsair was full loaded, weaponized, and he was flying out we believe to Portsmouth, N.H., or Kittery, Maine. The engine blew and, instead of bailing out of the plane, he guided the plan, which was very crippled, to Cashman sandlot where he tried to land it up on the sandlot.

Haverhill Rotary Gives Highest Honor to Klueber, Grassie, Marzilli and Rogers
|
Four Haverhill residents last week were each awarded Haverhill Rotary Club’s highest honor. During the Club’s annual Foundation Day, which honors Rotary International’s founder, Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to William J. Klueber, Dale Rogers, Jeff Grassie and Lisa Marzilli in recognition of their positive impacts on the community. Klueber, who retired as Haverhill’s auditor and director of finance and still serves as chairman of the Haverhill Retirement Board, is a longtime Haverhill Rotary Club treasurer. Rogers is an internationally recognized metal sculptor whose iconic big dogs are credited with bringing Haverhill much positive attention. His sculptures were recently used to help raise money for Whittier Birthplace.

Macy’s Annual Thanksgiving Parade Began on Haverhill’s Merrimack Street in 1854
|
(A version of this article first appeared on these pages in 2018.)
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition, celebrating its 97th annual event in New York City, actually has its roots in Haverhill. The iconic 1947 holiday film, “Miracle on 34th Street,” opens with the famous parade and Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle. The story takes place between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in midtown New York City. The film focuses on Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), a last-minute replacement hired to replace Santa. He becomes the department store’s Santa Claus.
