WWII Military Hero Marthe Cohn Lectures on Life as a French Spy Aug. 22 at NECC

The Chabad of Merrimack Valley presents a lecture by WWII veteran Marthe Cohn, who was awarded France's highest military honor–at age 80!—after serving as a spy in Germany. Her Thursday, Aug. 22 talk on the Haverhill campus of Northern Essex Community College is modeled after her autobiographical memoir “Behind Enemy Lines” and tells the story of her heroic actions during the war. Mount Washington Alliance’s ‘Neighbor Nights’ Resume for the Fall Monday, Aug. 19

“Neighbor Nights,” presented by the Mount Washington Alliance, are resuming for the fall starting Monday, Aug. 19. The gatherings take place each Monday through Oct. 21 at Somebody Cares New England, 358 Washington St., with locals meeting from 6-8 p.m. to share community resources, leadership opportunities and other ideas for Haverhill-based activism. Presentations are offered in English and Spanish and food and childcare is provided.

Dog Wash Benefiting Haverhill Animal Control Takes Place Saturday, Aug. 17

Beat August’s dog days of summer with a bath for your four-legged friend this weekend. Registration Now Open for September Creative Arts Program at Trinity Church

The Academy of Creative Arts at Trinity Episcopal Church invites students age 6-12 to register for its upcoming fall session that starts September 19. The performing arts camp offers over 20 different artistic and creative after school programs including music, art, dance and photography. John Ratka Memorial Golf Tournament Benefitting VNOC Is Aug. 26

The Greater Haverhill community is preparing to pay tribute to late Veterans Northeast Outreach Center Executive Director John Ratka at a Monday, Aug. 26 golf tournament in his name. Held at Campbells Scottish Highlands golf course, 79 Brady Ave, Salem, N.H., the tourney kicks off with registration and breakfast at 7 a.m. before golfers tee off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Golfers may take part for $125 per person and the entry fee includes the day’s green fees, a buffet lunch, raffle and other prizes. To register, call 978-372-3626.

Armenian Church at Hye Pointe Annual Picnic Happens Sunday, Aug. 25

The Armenian Church at Hye Pointe is hosting its annual picnic on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the new Family Life and Cultural Center, 1280 Boston Road (Route 125) in Bradford. Parishioners and members of the public are invited to the family-friendly event, which kicks off at noon and runs until 5 p.m.

The picnic includes a traditional Armenian menu of lamb shish, losh, and chicken kebab and kheyma dinners, with pastries and beverages also available. The Jason Naroian Ensemble provides the afternoon’s entertainment. .
