A man died in a three-alarm fire Friday afternoon at a multifamily apartment building in Groveland—the first fatal fire in the town since 1966. Groveland firefighters were dispatched just after 3 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a fire at 2 Manor Drive, a four-unit apartment building. Witnesses also reported hearing an explosion which may be traced to a residential oxygen tank. The name of the victim, who was in a first-floor apartment, was not immediately released pending formal identification by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to Groveland Fire Chief Robert E. Valentine, Police Chief Jeffrey T. Gillen, state Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett.
Michael “Mikey” Andrew Roy, 21, of Haverhill, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 21, from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Plaistow, N.H.
Born on March 18, 2001, Roy was adopted at the age of three. He grew up in Bradford and was a 2019 graduate of Haverhill High School. He had recently moved back home from Orlando, Fla., where he was a student at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute and worked as an alligator education specialist at Gatorland.
The state says Haverhill schools have shown a marked improvement in the implementation of standards regarding special education and civil rights. On Thursday, Deborah Ibanez, executive director of student support services for Haverhill schools, told the Haverhill School Committee the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education completed its most recent review of Haverhill school’s compliance in those two areas. “Every three years, DESE want to look at two different things, special education, and there’s about 55 indicators that they look at.
Haverhill City Clerk Linda L. Koutoulas’ office is looking to hire workers to staff poll locations during the upcoming election season. The clerk’s office said “Having an adequate number of poll workers to staff polling places on and before election day ensures voters receive the assistance they need at the polls and can help provide a positive and smooth voting experience for all.”
Inspectors are paid $195 per day and wardens and clerks $225 per day. Attendance at a training prior to the elections is required.
