Single-family homes were deemed the best use for three parcels on Amesbury Road, but despite a zoning change approved by the Haverhill City Council Tuesday night, a commercial use is still possible. City councilors sided with neighbors, voting unanimously to rezone 230, 240 and 250 Amesbury Road “residential medium” from “commercial highway.” However, the owner of the largest parcel, Prescott White, told the Council he plans to pursue a commercial option allowed under a three-year protection clause the law gives property owners after a zoning change. Christine Kwitchoff, representing a group called Citizens to Keep Amesbury Road a Residential Neighborhood, presented a petition signed by 170 residents who argue the zoning change is appropriate and in keeping with the character of the area. “It is a logical request that reflects what exists there today.
The “LIFT” campaign is underway at the future Cogswell ArtSpace which seeks to raise $350,000 to add an elevator and ensure accessibility at the South Main Street property. Organizer Creative Haverhill, already buoyed by its second state Cultural Facilities Grant—this one for $115,000, seeks a combination of public donations and sponsorships culminating in a “Rising Together” Tour and Tasting this September. Campaign lead Danielle Kravetz Smida and Creative Haverhill Director Erin Padilla say this latest effort will bring the long-envisioned project one step closer to the finish line.
Haverhill Patrolman Zachary Phair this week was promoted to the permanent rank of sergeant. He was sworn in by Haverhill Assistant City Clerk Rose Leonard-Flynn Tuesday during a ceremony attended by Mayor Melinda E. Barrett and Haverhill Police Chief Robert P. Pistone in the Theodore A. Pelosi Jr. City Council Chambers in City Hall. Phair joined the department in 2014.
Hannah Dustin Chapter 20 of the Disabled American Veterans is looking for golfers for its upcoming Charity Golf Tournament. The annual fundraising, in its seventh year, will be held Friday, Aug. 1, with registration open at 9 a.m., and tee time at 9:30 at Far Corner Golf Club, 5 Barker St., Boxford.
