Seeing a Problem and Fixing It
Ten years ago, a dramatic expansion of local news began with WHAV’s launch of in-depth hourly audio reports, a comprehensive website and the daily “Wavelengths” eNewspaper.
More than just reporting local news, the launch brought consistency and reliability to coverage not seen since the days before private equity investors hollowed out newspapers. Audiences, for example, could again expect news of City Council and School Committee meetings after every meeting and delivery of all news while still fresh—the “new” in “news.”
In fact, it was the biggest commitment to local news since the WHAV call letters hit the public airwaves in 1947—ironic in a sense since the radio station was founded by a newspaper.
Even better, thanks to its nonprofit model, WHAV news is available to everyone without a subscription or online paywall because everyone benefits when residents are fully informed.
