With Ongoing Sewage Overflow Projects Top Priority, Haverhill Plans for Future Environmental Disasters
Haverhill’s top environmental challenge is heavy and frequent rainfall, according to a “natural hazard” assessment. If overwhelmed, combined stormwater and sewage pipes can overflow into the Merrimack River. Hanna Mogensen, of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission, told Haverhill city councilors Tuesday night the regional assessment allows communities to access federal money for non-emergency measures and offers a “roadmap” to prevent …

Don’t Forget to Notify WHAV of Your Big Event
Almost daily, WHAV hears from businesses and organizations a day or two before an event, panicked that only a tiny few—or worse, none—have reserved a seat at an important function that was mentioned only on social media.
In 2023, a Forbes business columnist showed research showing unpaid Facebook posts reach less than 1% of fans and the number is still dropping.
“On Facebook, which remains the most used social media platform online, organic social reach has been declining for years now, with research showing that just 0.07% of a page’s fans engage with the average organic post. Instagram and Twitter are also experiencing the same issue,” wrote Ismael El Qudsi in a column “Are The Days Of Organic Social Media Reach Over?”
Locally, this explains why almost no one showed up for a recent meeting that was announced only on Facebook. Of course, the reason for the sinking response rate is that Meta, owner of Facebook, is a for-profit company and it makes money only when users pay to “boost” postings.
A word of advice too. Get news of your future event to WHAV as soon as possible. In some cases, the function may appear as a one-time “Business Bulletin” or “Community Spotlight” story on-air, online, everywhere. In other cases, a modest paid program may be the most effective way to reach your target audiences. Take time to write a description and email [email protected] or use this template online.
Whatever you do, don’t send a poster or simply “tag” WHAV on social media. WHAV receives thousands of such messages and, with only a few staffers, there’s not enough time to re-type and organize these items.
