The public has opportunities to shape policy this week as various Haverhill boards meet. In the interest of transparency in government, WHAV provides this list of upcoming meetings every week.
The Haverhill School Committee’s Diversity Subcommittee Tuesday night is proposing to add a “Belonging Amendment” to school policy, encouraging greater involvement in certain activities by students and parents alike.
The proposed two-page addition to the school system’s diversity policy puts the emotional and physical safety of all students in the spotlight by ensuring access to guidance and adjustment counselors. The proposal policy also encourages all Haverhill High School students to participate in various school programs including the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Union and Student Council and seeks to increase parental participation in the high school’s Parent Teacher Organization, Special Education Parent Advisory Council and workshops on how parents can advocate for their children.
Diversity Subcommittee Chair Yonnie Collins told WHAV adding the amendment to the school system’s equity and diversity policy is a priority for her.
Haverhill high school and middle school student government leaders are invited to discuss and weigh in when the Diversity Subcommittee meets Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. It will take place online via Google Meet.
The meeting will also include a discussion with the students on civic engagement. The link to join the meeting is here.
