An unidentified man found dead in the Merrimack River in Haverhill Wednesday night was apparently swept along Merrimack River currents from Lawrence.
Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker said the man was recovered from the Merrimack River. Officials report that at about 6:35 p.m., Lawrence Police received a call from a 50 Island St. apartment resident with a view of the Merrimack River. The resident reported seeing someone being taken down river by the current.
The North Andover Fire Department was dispatched, launching a boat and, at approximately 7:21 p.m., found the man in the river north of the Amazon building in North Andover. Firefighters estimate they retrieved the body in the Haverhill portion of the Merrimack River.
The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to Tucker’s office. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
