A Pentucket Regional Middle High School student was found Wednesday to have allegedly posted a threat against the school on social media.

West Newbury Police Chief Michael Dwyer and school Superintendent Justin Bartholomew said they were notified by a social media platform of the online threat and launched an investigation. Police and school administrators said they “worked together to quickly identify the student who allegedly posted the threat,” but did not release the student’s age, name, grade or what action was taken.

“Student safety is our priority. We’re committed to always working with our communities to ensure schools are secure and every child can learn safely, Dwyer said in a statement.

Officials said the incident remains under investigation by the West Newbury Police. There was an increased police presence at the school on Wednesday and there may be additional police on campus Thursday.

Dwyer thanked Merrimac Police Chief Eric M. Shears, Merrimac Police Detectives, Rockport Police Chief John Horvath and members of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council School Threat Assessment and Response System team for their assistance.
