The man killed in a car crash early Monday morning at an Interstate 495 rest area has been identified as 33-year-old Stefan Mendes-Monteiro of Haverhill.
Michael Keefe-Feldman, chief of communications for Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker, Tuesday morning named Mendes-Monteiro as the driver and sole occupant of a Toyota RAV4.
An initial investigation released by Tucker’s office reported Mendes-Monteiro was driving northbound on I-495 in Haverhill “at a high rate of speed” Monday, just before 3 a.m. when his vehicle entered the rest area and crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer.
Massachusetts State Police and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the crash.
