Area residents were among those feeling the ground shake Monday morning after a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Maine.

The United States Geological Survey said the 10:22 a.m., earthquake hit a little more than six miles off York Harbor, Maine.

Reports in Haverhill ranged from unusual rattles to a feeling of floors shaking. There were no reports of damage.

New Hampshire Department of Safety Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management used the opportunity to remind residents and visitors to be prepared for all types of hazards, including earthquakes.

“Include all hazards when you are creating a family emergency plan,” said Director Robert Buxton. “You should also hold regular drills to practice what to do during an earthquake. It’s the best way to keep you and your family safe.”

During an earthquake, if you are inside, you should drop, cover and hold on. If you are outside, you should move away from buildings and other items that can topple over.

New Hampshire 911 did not receive any calls about damage or injuries as of 10:45 a.m. Officials added that anyone concerned about possible damage to their home or business should call their local fire department.
