Updated: Dive Team Recovers Body of 56-Year-Old Woman Who Fell Through Ice in Atkinson

The body of a 56-year-old Atkinson, N.H., woman was recovered Sunday morning from Big Island Pond by a New Hampshire Fish and Game dive team after a search and rescue operation.

Officials from New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol said Emer Mezzetti drowned after falling through the ice. Her body was recovered from the pond in the area of Osprey Road in Hampstead, N.H.

Atkinson Fire officials said in a release the first report of the woman falling through the ice came Saturday afternoon at 5:18 via an emergency 911 call received by Plaistow Emergency Communications. Besides Atkinson, which sent in a rescuer in a cold-water suit with another firefighter handling ropes from the shore, first responders were dispatched from Hampstead and Derry, N.H. While rescuers worked two hours and made contact, the Atkinson release said, they were initially unable to recover the woman. New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol was first to report Saturday the woman likely drowned.

The search for the unidentified adult was suspended overnight and continued Sunday.

In its statement, the Atkinson Fire Department reported an Atkinson firefighter was injured and taken from the scene for treatment.

Besides Atkinson Police and Fire, Plaistow Fire/Rescue and EMS, Hampstead Police and Fire, and Derry Police and Fire, mutual aid came from Salem Fire and PrideStar Trinity EMS. Windham, Haverhill and Newton provided station coverage.

New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol reported Saturday a woman fell through the ice at Big Island Pond in Atkinson, N.H., and likely drowned.

The search for the unidentified adult was suspended overnight and was scheduled to resume Sunday. Police said first responders were dispatched just before 5:30 p.m., Saturday, to Chase Island Road in Atkinson for reports of someone yelling for help.

Marine Patrol officers, along with members of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Atkinson Police and Fire, Plaistow Fire/Rescue and EMS, Hampstead Police and Fire, Derry Police and Fire, PrideStar EMS and Salem Fire Department.
