A 56-year-old former Haverhill man was sentenced this week in Salem Superior Court to 13 to 14 years in state prison for rape of a child with force.

Gjon Gjegji, now of Pelham, N.H., was found guilty by a jury last Sept. 27 of three counts of rape of a child, aggravated by age difference, and three counts of rape of a child with force. Gjegji was indicted in March of 2022 for crimes that occurred in 2007.

Judge Camille F. Sarrouf Jr. presided over the case and handed down the sentence.

“We truly admire the strength and courage demonstrated by the victim in this case throughout the court process,” said Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker.

Gjegji was represented by attorney William Sullivan. Following the state prison sentence, Gjegji will be on probation for three years.

Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia represented the Commonwealth in the case and Amy Snow served as victim/witness advocate. The investigation was conducted by Haverhill Police Officer Penny Portalla.
