A 25-year-old man, accused of spraying and marking graffiti at 38 private and public sites Sunday, was ordered Tuesday to return to Haverhill District Court next month to answer to the charges.

Alexander M. Jarboe of Locke Street was arrested by Haverhill Police Monday and arraigned Tuesday before Judge Cesar A. Archilla on 38 counts of defacing property, also known as “tagging.” He was released on $1,500 cash bail and must return to court Friday, Oct. 18.

According to Haverhill police reports, Jarboe allegedly used spray paint and paint markers to deface buildings such as Historic New England, fences, mail boxes, city-owned signs, trash bins, a MeVa bus shelter, electrical boxes and donation bins beginning early Sunday morning. He allegedly struck targets along River, Winter, Locke, Emerson, Walnut, Essex and Merrimack Streets; Lafayette Square; Hilldale Avenue; and the Rep. Brian S. Dempsey Boardwalk.

According to police reports, Jarboe’s likeness was caught on surveillance video along the Boardwalk riding a black e-Bike. Officers talked with him Monday after believing he matched descriptions from the videos. Police reported he was carrying no tagging materials. Later, around 5 p.m., officers reported calling Jarboe and asked him to come to the police station, but the man refused. Police subsequently arrested him at his Locke Street apartment.
