Haverhill River Bards, in partnership with Creative Haverhill, plans a Commemorative Poetry Reading in Remembrance of 9/11 on the 23rd anniversary of the Al-Qaeda attacks on America.

A resource containing poems written or first published within the first year after the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be available for those who wish to choose a poem or verse that resonates with the solemnity of the occasion. Local poets are also being asked to write or read poems that reflect the “shared history and the strength we find in coming together as a community as well as the enduring strength we find as a nation.”

“As we approach the anniversary of a day that has been etched into the heart of our nation, this gathering aims to honor the memory of those we lost, the resilience of survivors, and the unyielding bravery of our first responders,” said Haverhill Poet Laureate Dan Speers.

The free poetry night takes place Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 7-9 p.m., at HC Media Studio 101, Harbor Place, 2 Merrimack St., Haverhill.

Joining the local poetry group, Haverhill River Bards, will be Mayor Melinda E. Barrett, several city councilors, other poets and the public. Attendees not only may witness the readings but also to participate. “Whether you have written a poem or would like to read a selected piece, your contribution will be a valued part of the evening,” Speers said. He added, “the community presence and voice would greatly contribute to the reverence of this occasion as we pay homage to the victims, salute the valor of our firefighters, and reflect on the unity that emerged from the ashes of tragedy.”

Now in its eighth year, the Haverhill River Bards have offer readings that celebrate what the group calls “the rich tapestry of voices within our community.” The commemoration will be streamed live on the internet and videotaped by HC Media.
