Haverhill residents can receive valuable lifesaving training, help relieve a dangerous shortage of lifeguards and may qualify for free American Red Cross training over the next few weeks.

Training includes both online learning modules and 20 hours of in-person training over three days. Thanks to a city grant, the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is free to low- to moderate income residents.

Online learning modules include cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator for professional rescuers and first aid final eLearning exam and must be completed before the first in-person session. In-person sessions involve practice skills and demonstration of competency and take place Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11 through 13, from 1-8 p.m. each day, at Bradford Swim Club, 328 Salem St., Haverhill.

For those who do not qualify for free classes, tuition is $425 and a $25 non-refundable deposit is required. The course, administered by American Red Cross Instructors, Patrick Corr and Anna Rossi, includes online access, in person learning days, CPR mask and two-year certification upon successful completion of the course.

Students are required to pass a written exam within seven days of course completion.

Those wishing to enroll or check eligibility are advised to email [email protected] with a subject line of “Lifeguard Training August 2024.” Required information is name, birthday, telephone number and best email address.
