As part of its summer events program, Buttonwoods Museum is hosting a boatmaking and shipbuilding craft class Tuesday.

Families with kids in grades K-6 are invited to explore Haverhill’s first major industry. From original Native American canoes to large European colonial ships, youngsters will learn about the many different types of boats that were made in Haverhill and get the chance to craft their own.

After the lesson, they may carve dugout canoes from wax and build model ships from wax paper and popsicle sticks. They’ll also test whether their boats can float before taking them home.

The cost is $10 per single child and $5 per additional child after the first. All attendees must register for the event via googleforms.com or by emailing [email protected] the number of children attending.

The event is Tuesday, July 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at Buttonwoods Museum, 240 Water St., Haverhill.
