A military cannon salute Thursday formally kicks off the seasonal presentation of 160 “Hometown Heroes” banners, honoring veterans, going up throughout the city’s central business district.

Besides the military cannon salute, organizers say, the Third Annual Hometown Heroes Tribute Program features speakers, distinguished guests and local officials. Organized by the Exchange Club of Haverhill, banners appear on poles along Essex, Washington, Merrimack, Main, Water and South Main Streets; Bailey Boulevard; and Basiliere and Comeau Bridges.

The ceremony takes place Thursday May 25, 2 p.m. at GAR Park in downtown Haverhill.

The patriotic banners are displayed from Memorial Day to Veterans Day and then returned to donors.
