Gov. Maura Healey’s Economic Development Planning Council, which locally includes UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen and Sen. Barry R. Finegold, comes to Haverhill next month in search of ideas and opportunities from the business community that could become central to state policy over the next four years.

Healey, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao kicked off the planning process Friday with the first meeting of the Council at the Massachusetts State House. During which, plans for a Merrimack Valley regional session were set for Tuesday, June 13, from noon-2 p.m., at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill.

“From day one, our administration has been committed to making Massachusetts a thriving and great place to live, work, raise a family and do business,” said Healey. “We have assembled this council of leaders from across the business community and representing every region of our state to advise us on how to harness our tremendous human talent and assets to create opportunity across the state.”

The council will hold a series of engagement sessions across the state this spring and summer to gather public input and then, as required by law, write a strategic plan to guide Massachusetts economic development policy over the next four years.

Finegold is the Senate chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies and was designated to serve on the council by Senate President Karen E. Spilka. Another member of the council with local ties is Glynn Llyod, executive director, of Mill Cities Community Investments.
