Hortense Burton, Haverhill Teacher Nearly 40 Years, Wife of Former Fire Chief and Mayor Dies at 96

Hortense E. (Archambault) Burton, 96, a longtime Haverhill school teacher, native and lifelong resident of Haverhill, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 17, at her home surrounded by her family.

The daughter of the late Clarence and M. Blanche (Goudreault) Archambault, she attended Haverhill Public Schools and was a member of the Haverhill High School class of 1944. She was the wife of former Haverhill Fire Chief and Mayor Lewis C. Burton

She received her bachelor’s degrees in English and Education from Bridgewater State College and was employed for 39 years as a teacher in the Haverhill school system. During her career, she taught at the William H. Moody, John C. Tilton, Hannah Duston and Albert B. Consentino Schools until her retirement. Following her retirement, Burton served as a volunteer teacher at the former St. Joseph School for many years.

A communicant of All Saints Parish and the former Saint Joseph Parish, she was also a member of the National Education Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association and Haverhill Teachers Association.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and daughter, she also enjoyed playing cards. She was a longtime summer resident of Cow Island on Lake Winnipesaukee and also enjoyed traveling, especially her yearly trips to Florida with her late husband Lewis to visit with friends.

The wife of the late Lewis C. Burton, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sons, Jeffrey L. Burton and Rev. Lt. Commander Richard T. Burton, and her daughter Patricia B. “Tricia” Dupre, all of Haverhill; grandchildren, Jessie A. (Laliberty) Marsh of Haverhill; William R. “Willie” Laliberty and his wife Charlayna of North Hartland, Vt., and Graham Burton of Philadelphia, Penn.;  three great grandchildren, Zachary, Owen and Williaml; brother Lucien Archambault of Gloucester; and sister Elaine (Burton) Archambault of Methuen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Archambault and daughter-in-law Alicia Burton.

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours Thursday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m.-noon, at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, N.H.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. at All Saints Church, Haverhill, MA, followed by burial in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill.
