Haverhill’s First Woman Developer, ‘Peg’ Franzone Mathieson Dies at 91

Madelyn F. “Peg” Franzone Mathieson, 91, of Bradford, passed away Friday, Aug. 5, at Lawrence General Hospital.

She was born in Newburyport on June 20, 1931, daughter of the late Arthur and Christine (Boyd) Dunn. She was educated in the Haverhill school system and graduated from Haverhill High School. She owned and operated Franzone Realty for numerous years.

Nana Peg or Nani, as she was known to many, enjoyed spending her time reading, knitting and cooking. As the first female developer in Haverhill, she was happiest while in the middle of construction projects.

Mathieson was the wife of the late Robert Mathieson, mother to the late Daniel J. Franzone Jr. as well as mother-in-law to the late Patrick Quinn.

She is survived by three daughters, Cindy Franzone-Ryan of Bradford, Maria Franzone Rossman and her husband James of Wells, Maine, Anusuya Quinn of Wells, Maine, three grandsons, Daniel Ryan, Stephen Ryan and his wife Christine, Elias Quinn and his wife Claire, niece Heather Dunn Tittman and nephew Larry Dunn.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her calling hours Monday, Aug. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at H.L. Farmer and Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 S. Main St. Her funeral will be Tuesday morning, Aug. 9, beginning at 9 at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Sacred Hearts Church, Bradford. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Bradford. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Haverhill Exchange Club, PO Box 543, Haverhill, MA 01831.
