A 36-year-old Gilford, N.H., woman was sentenced to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to dealing in the drug fentanyl she purchased in Methuen last year.

Acting New Hampshire U.S. Attorney John J. Farley said Friday Sara Zareas was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for participating in a conspiracy to distribute, and possess with intent to distribute, fentanyl.

According to court documents and court statements, police received information June 17, 2020 that Zareas would be traveling to Methuen to purchase fentanyl. Officers followed the truck in which she was a passenger and saw a hand-to-hand transaction between the occupants of the truck and another vehicle in a parking lot. A New Hampshire state trooper later stopped the truck as it drove through Windham, N.H.  The driver admitted she drove Zareas to Methuen to buy fentanyl in exchange for a small amount for herself.  Zareas consented to a search of her backpack and person which revealed scales, cellophane bags and opioid kits. The pair had over 41 grams of fentanyl in their possession.

Zareas pleaded guilty on April 7.
