Haverhill city councilors are expected to consider additional updates to Haverhill’s downtown paid parking program when it meets tomorrow night.
The Council approved Mayor James J. Fiorentini’s request last week to increase parking fees from 50 cents to $1 per hour when the city resumes collecting fees. It postponed, however, a vote on two other parking proposals. These include increasing the price of monthly parking passes from $20 to $25 and setting uniform paid parking periods from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at all downtown locations.
Last January, Councilor William J. Macek, a longtime opponent of paid parking, agreed an overhaul of the program is overdue.
“It’s been a long time since we have made changes and there is a need. It is a mess. Our downtown parking plan is confusing. It isn’t the same here or there. There’s a lot of things that need to be addressed,” he said.
At the same meeting, Councilor Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien called differing rules between parts of downtown—on-street and in parking lots—“foolishness.”
