Haverhill’s Buttonwoods Museum is reopening the Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Center for travel and tourist information.

The visitor center reopens next Wednesday, Sept. 16, and will operate Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Buttonwoods, 240 Water St., Haverhill, is one of 13 welcome centers around Essex County, providing information to the 2.7 million annual visitors to this federally designated region.

Although the visitor center is open, the public is permitted only in the main entrance and lower gallery. Guests are welcome, however to view “Rightfully Hers,” an exhibit celebrating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. The timeline details significant events that occurred in Haverhill and Massachusetts set against the backdrop of the national movement. Information from the U.S. National Archives is on display as well as the poster exhibit, “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence,” from the Smithsonian Institute.

The three historic buildings that comprise the museum otherwise remain closed and unavailable for tours this season.

Buttonwoods will follow a COVID-19 protocol, limiting the number of visitors to three at a time inside the building. Face coverings must be worn over nose and mouth at all times and visitors must maintain a social distance of a minimum of six feet.
