An off-duty Massport Firefighter, who lives in Groveland, was honored recently along with other first responders for their roles in tending to a man whose car crashed into a tree at the end of July.

Massport Firefighter Jeffrey Maniscalco was returning to his Groveland home after his Logan International Airport shift when he discovered a vehicle that had crashed into a tree on East Main Street in Georgetown. He stopped and began to attend to a 61-year-old man later identified as Brian Courtney. The man had suffered a medical emergency, causing him to lose consciousness and crash his Ford pick-up truck into a tree.

“Even with all of the training, experience and specialized equipment our personnel have, it isn’t every day we get to celebrate a happy ending to an incident of this severity,” said Georgetown Fire Chief Fred Mitchell said. “Firefighter Maniscalco’s actions in particular remind us that we are never truly off duty in the world of first responders. He may have left Logan thinking he was done working for the day, but he was in the right place at the right time, and he helped save a life.”

Courtney was reunited with Maniscalco and Georgetown Police and Firefighters and Newbury Fire Department during a ceremony last Wednesday at Georgetown Fire Department. Georgetown Police Chief Donald C. Cudmore said, “It was heartwarming to have the opportunity to hold a reunion with him and everyone who responded. Celebrating the happy endings is tremendously meaningful, and we’re thankful this was possible.”

Besides Maniscalco, also honored were Georgetown Fire Capt. Brett Moyer, Georgetown Firefighter/EMT Jeff Driscoll, Newbury Firefighter/Paramedic Karl Granoth, Newbury Fire Lt. Paramedic James Chadbourne and Georgetown Police Officers Eric Jones, Courtney Thomas and Taylor Ford.

Courtney was taken by Newbury Fire to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he received treatment.
