A long-awaited drawing takes place today for the 44 affordable units being made available on the site of the former Gerson Furniture Co. in Haverhill.

The project, at 181 Washington St., was developed by the nonprofit Coalition for a Better Acre, associated with the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center. Veterans Northeast Executive Director Edward Mitchell, a guest yesterday on WHAV’s morning program, explains how the units are broken out.

“Eight one-bedroom units, 31 two-bedroom units and five three-bedroom units. Seventy percent of those are veterans preference, so we’ll strive to keep that 70% level thru the years.”

Mitchell says applicants must meet income requirements, and those seeking the veterans preference must also meet the definition of a veteran. Then, he adds, things will happen fast.

“In regards to the actual move-in date, I believe they’re shooting for Sept. 1. So, once they’re notified, then they’ll be tasked to provide their security deposit and first months’ rent and start their move-in process in early September.”

Residents have access to a parking garage in the back, easy access to bus and commuter rail services and veterans’ services and programs, including an onsite food pantry. The building will be managed by Maloney Properties, and additional information may be found at TheGersonBuilding.com.
