I-495 northbound lane and ramp closures take place overnights from Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials said there will be double right lane closures between exits 49 and 50, Monday, July 27, from 8 p.m., through 5 a.m., Tuesday, July 28. There will also be double right lane closures nightly from Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, from 9 p.m. to the following morning at 5.  Lane closures are necessary to allow the contractor to place the concrete deck on the new I-495 bridge over the Merrimack River and continue pier protection barrier work.

The exit 49 ramp on I-495 northbound also closes Monday, July 27, and Wednesday, July 29 beginning at 9 each night through 5 the next morning. The closure is necessary to accommodate concrete delivery. During the closure, traffic will be detoured to exit 50 for Route 97.

The new bridges, being constructed at a cost of $102 million, are designed to last 75 years as opposed to the existing bridges built less than 60 years ago. Officials say the goals are to eliminate “constant emergency repair work,” improve roadway safety with full-width breakdown lanes and provide a dedicated exit lane on the northbound bridge for exit 49, near Westgate Center.
