The Haverhill City Council Tuesday night granted a special permit to allow construction of 36 apartments at the former St. Joseph’s School.

Developer Jonathan Cody of Atlantis Investments, previously received the support of the Haverhill Appeals and Planning Boards to construct 28 studio and eight one-bedroom apartments in the former school building at 26 Broadway, in the Lafayette Square area. The developer received high praise from local residents for his plans to revitalize the school; among them, Elaine Barker, whose family attended St. Joseph’s.

“Over the last few years, I have witnessed the work that Jonathan Cody has done in Lafayette Square, and now Jonathan has plans for St. Joseph’s School, bringing life back to the 129-year-old structure. What a great effort to Oak Terrace,” she said.

The developer received a number of variances from the Zoning Board of Appeals including a reduced lot size and less open space. The school also only has 39 available parking spaces, rather than 54 normally required for that many units. Cody did purchase the property across the street, however, which offers 40 more parking spaces that could be used if necessary.

Cody also hopes that the bowling alley and gym will be available to the public.
