The Haverhill School Committee voted unanimously Thursday to let School Superintendent Margaret Marotta know there is interest in keeping her on the job after her contract expires.

Even though the superintendent has a year left on her contract, Committee Vice Chairman Richard J. Rosa pointed out that the contract does require the School Committee to let her know if they are interested in extending that contract.

“The superintendent’s contract states that she need to let the School Committee know by June 1 that she would be interested in an extension of her contract, which she has done and then our obligation, according to the contract, is to let her know by July 1 that we will negotiate with her,” Rosa said.

Committee members were clear the vote does not launch negotiations which wouldn’t begin until September or October, following an evaluation of the superintendent’s work.

Mayor James J. Fiorentini said he would appoint a negotiating committee as the September date draws closer.
