The Haverhill Farmers’ Market will be back in business this summer, but with a few new rules.
Haverhill city councilors voted unanimously last week to allow the popular attraction to open with conditions consistent with pandemic orders. Councilor Timothy J. Jordan read a letter from Jeff Grassie, a local artist and organizer of the market, outlining his plans for keeping vendors and shoppers safe from the coronavirus.
“There will only be an allowed number of customers in the market at any given time and that will be regulated by myself and other dedicated volunteers. The market will also be cordoned off with only a few access points for entry and exit. There will be no live music or kids’ activities until we are notified by the city of Haverhill and the state of Massachusetts that we can,” Jordan read.
Grassie said he will be visiting other Farmers’ Markets in the area to get advice and suggestions before opening in Haverhill. Opening day is set for Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Herbert H. Goecke Memorial Parking Deck on Merrimack Street.
The market, which allows residents to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers, has been a part of the city’s summer events since 1978.
