A lottery is taking place for affordable one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments at the new 44-unit Gerson development on Washington Street near downtown.

While at least 70 percent of the units are set aside for veterans and veterans’ households, applications are being accepted from eligible low-income individuals and families. Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini encourages veterans seeking housing to apply.

“There is a tremendous need for veterans housing in Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley and this project helps fill that gap,” the mayor said, adding, “Our goal is that no veteran should be homeless”

Apartments include air-conditioning, on-site parking, laundry and around-the-clock maintenance. Heat, electricity and water are included in rent and monthly rents range from $1,047 to $1,453.

Lottery applications are available in the mayor’s office or can be downloaded along with additional information including rental prices and income guidelines at thegersonbuilding.com. To request an application by mail or email, call Maloney Properties at 617-209-5429.  The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, Aug. 3. Winners will be drawn Aug. 11, 11 a.m. at Veterans Northeast Outreach Center, 10 Reed St.

Haverhill is one of many public and private funders of the redevelopment project, which was built by Coalition For A Better Acre of Lowell and Veterans Northeast Outreach Center.
