This Memorial Day and all week, John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School is hosting an online or on location remembrance open to all Haverhill families.

The school’s Title 1 Facilitators Jean Sargent and Jen Rubera said Friday, “Memorial Day 2020: Honor and Remember” gives families the opportunity to learn about Memorial Day with three activities that include watching videos, a slide show or optionally driving by or visiting Haverhill’s monuments.

“Unlike other holidays, Memorial Day is not a celebratory holiday like Halloween or Thanksgiving. It is a day to honor soldiers who died while serving,” they said.

The activities begin online by clicking here.

A “Haverhill Monuments” slide show lists monuments and a cemetery to visit that honors veterans, including Gale Park, GAR Park, Global Peace Monument on Ginty Boulevard, Monument Square, the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Mill Brook Park, Washington Square and St. Joseph’s Cemetery. There is also a short video on the history of Memorial Day and a reading of “The Wall” by Eve Bunting. “The Wall” tells the story of a boy who visits the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with his dad to find his grandfather’s name.

Families are invited to offer feedback about the activity by next Saturday, May 30.
